Airbnb runs an online marketplace for stays, experiences and services, connecting over 5 million hosts with guests across 220+ countries and regions.

Airbnb operates an online marketplace that connects hosts offering stays, experiences and services with guests seeking accommodation and local community connections. Founded in 2007 and originating in San Francisco, the company lists more than 9 million active listings across 220+ countries and regions and 150,000+ cities and towns. More than 5 million hosts have earned over $300 billion on the platform, which has recorded over 2 billion guest arrivals; a typical US host earned $15,000 in 2024.

Technical work spans several domains: the core marketplace platform itself, travel technology, digital payments and tax remittance (over $17 billion in taxes remitted globally), and trust and safety systems, including anti-discrimination work. Beyond stays, the company runs Experiences and Online Experiences, and its products include Project Lighthouse, a programme aimed at reducing bias on the platform.

Airbnb also operates Airbnb.org, a nonprofit initiative providing free emergency housing in times of crisis, having housed more than 250,000 people to date. Stated cultural emphases include economic empowerment of hosts, sustainability initiatives, anti-discrimination and inclusion efforts, and institutional partnerships such as with the International Olympic Committee.
